Most Austrian wines stay in Austria, where Austrians drink it. A good portion gets into the surrounding countries of the European Union. A fairly small - but growing - amount gets to the United States.

Austrian wine had a moment a few years back. A native Austrian grape called gruner veltiner became a sommelier must-have, popping up on wine lists across the country and championed for its versatility and food-friendliness.
Stoeger Seed Oils is the first Austrian producer to take home the prestigious sofi™ Award. The 41st sofi awards, from the Specialty Food Association, were presented at a red-carpet ceremony hosted by internationally-acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelsson at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York on July 1, 2013.Stoeger Cherry Seed Oil won the Golden Award in the Outstanding Oil categroy. The oil is made from pure cherry seeds that are slowly roasted and cold-pressed. A sofi Award is the top honor in the $86 billion specialty food industry. “sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation.

While reading the menu at Viener Fest, the new Austrian restaurant near Centennial Park, a continuous loop of the song “My Favorite Things” kept playing in my mind: “cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels, door bells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles.”
